Marks & Clerk have recently released the XR Patent Trends Report 2026 which examines how innovation in the Extended Reality sector has evolved over the last four years.

Looking at patent filing data from the European Patent Office and international PCT system, the report reveals an interesting shift. While filing growth has slowed since the Metaverse boom, XR innovation remains strong and is increasingly focused on practical applications and commercial deployment across industries including healthcare, telecoms, automotive, aviation and entertainment.

Some of the key findings include:

  • XR innovation remains at historically high levels, despite slower growth
  • Smaller companies, start-ups and universities are playing an increasingly important role in driving innovation
  • AI-enabled user experiences, including eye tracking, object recognition and human-computer interaction, are among the hottest areas of activity
  • XR adoption is broadening across a diverse range of commercial sectors
